Yes, We Have Started…
Jan 15th
Change and transformation is the only constant for 2010. We have started the Experiment, but I have been too busy to post our trials. I have been keeping a written diary of our daily trials and tribulations and will update this blog tomorrow. Stay-tuned!
A Local Interweb Resource…
Dec 27th
As we get closer to starting, Carlos has been asking me questions like… what about local Olive Oil for the salad dressings that you make? What about tomatoes (we both love tomatoes)? My friend Celeste Diaz-Ferrero consults with a local company, greenling.com that more than satisfactorily answered those pesky questions.
We can do all of our grocery and produce shopping from one location on the web, have it delivered for free and it’s local. Tomatoes and Olive Oil are still an option!
Thank you to everyone who sent resources and suggestions. I will be adding a page to the site with all of the great information.
Starting January 2, 2010 : 30 Days of Eating Wild
Dec 21st
My husband, Carlos, and I are ringing in the New Year with what some might see as a radical experiment. For 30 days, all of our food will be purchased directly from local farmers. We will not eat out. We will not purchase any food from supermarkets. We are eliminating wheat, dairy and alcohol from our diet. We will prepare our food using our gas oven or grill. No microwave. I will use this blog to report on money spent, time spent shopping and preparing food, and resources we find.
Why?
Carlos’ family has a history of heart disease and type two diabetes. My family has a variety of health problems. I have two girlfriends being treated for aggressive endometriosis in their mid 30’s- it has spread to other organs- liver, lungs. Another girlfriend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29. Frankly, I am afraid. I do not want to live in fear. I want to live in love.
I do not want to get sick. I do not want to rely on better living through chemistry, and really want no part of our western medical system. In all ancient healing and wellness traditions, good nutrition is the key to vibrant health and wellbeing.
I also believe that there is a system in place that keeps us sick. This system is run by large food corporations and drug companies. After reading Fast Food Nation and watching Super Size Me, I do not want to support organizations that I do not trust.
Stimulating local economies and building micro-economies- especially farmers and growers- not chains like HEB, WalMart and even WholeFoods- will help this country grow financially stronger.
I want to know my food before I eat it… where it comes from, how it was taken care of, how it was butchered. I want a connection to my food. I want to learn how cows and chickens are butchered and see it happen. From an ethical position, if I can’t watch my food being prepared, I should not eat it.
I could go on and on with reasons why… and will. If you have resources or comments, questions, please leave comment or hit us up…
We are what we eat.
